Summer Inspired: Design Competition Winner

The resource website idinterns.com held a design competition in which participants were asked to create a 2" x 10" summer inspired banner for their home page.

I took two different approaches to this project: the first being a more graphic and story-driven image, and the second being a collage-styled image incorporating tools of the trade and using vivid colors reminiscent of summer. The first shows a man walking off the beach with ideas flowing from his mind after a fresh dose of inspiration from good ole Mother Nature. The second is a bit more abstract with a posable sketch mannequin waving hello to summer.

My first design, titled Solar Flow, was selected to be displayed on the idinterns.com home page from July 20th to August 20th, '09.

I would like to re-establish a culture of ingenuity -- a culture that once forged frontiers; a culture that honors those who work with their hands, design with their hearts, and never stop expanding their minds. I want to replace complacency and apathy with dissatisfaction and drive, and I want my objects and philosophy to catalyze this shift.

I have chosen to hone my skills in the areas of woodworking, [limited] metal fabrication, visual communication, self-motivation, and resourcefulness. I'm capable of utilizing digital tools (Creative Suite, 3D modeling software, etc.) during my design process, but I prefer working in the world of tangible objects. I have a tremendous appreciation for craftsmanship, and I have extremely high standards when it comes to my work.

While my technical skills may be the tools I employ throughout the various stages of the design process, I am ever considerate of the reasoning behind every decision I make -- the macro side, the big picture is a very important part of every project I pursue. I consider materials: where they originate and where they are likely to end up. I consider the perception of my objects to ensure their intrinsic value and meaning is properly conveyed to an observer. And most importantly, I always confirm with myself before beginning a project that it will be a necessary and beneficial addition to the space it will occupy.

My Work Experience is as follows:

Lineage Systems LLC; August 2009; Contract Work
Graphic Designer
- Duties included designing logos for mobile applications, communicating concepts to a project manager,
and collaborating with software developers to ensure optimal usability.

Goebel Fixture Co., Hutchinson, MN; June 2007 to August 2007
Cabinet Maker
- Duties included finishing and assembling wooden shelves and other fixtures.

3M, Hutchinson, MN; February 2006 to August 2006
Packing Operator / Vinyl Converting Operator
- Duties included operating and maintaining tape winders, slitters, and various packing equipment.

Northern Metal Finishing; June 2001 to August 2004
Packaging and Assembly Technician
- Duties included inspecting metal parts for imperfections, assembling forward control kits for motorcycles,
and packaging them for shipment.
